Espro Toroid Pitcher w/ Gaggia Carezza

by gaggiacarezza on April 7, 2010

I'm new to espresso, having owned my Gaggia for only a month. I got the Toroid pitcher as a gift 2 weeks ago and wanted to show how it actually works. See my review here: www.home-barista.com

@jrduarte99 You absolutely need a grinder. nothing will help as much.

A great grinder goes a long way. The grinder is more important than the espresso machine itself! Don’t expect any crema if your using preground beans as a lot of the moisture/flavour gets lost as its exposed to air. Crema relies on a lot of things: the beans (must have good quality, roasted beans), the grinder (very important!), tamping (a metal one would be good), the machine (as long as its half decent). Google crema guide for more info.

I bought a Gaggia Evolution, about 2 weeks ago. This is my first machine, but I feel frustrated cause I couldn’t make a perfect shot yet. I have just a very thin, light-coloured crema. I didn’t buy a nice tamper yet, neither a grinder. Do you think it could help me getting a nice crema? May it be the problem? I’m still using the plastic tamper which came with the machine.

Thanks – if only I could do it that nicely every time!

I usually do pull the machine to the edge of the counter, but this angle was the only way I could get the tripod/light good enough to bother. In reality, though, I find my problem is more getting the wand deep enough (especially with less milk in the jug) rather than space below it. It’s a short little bugger.

Sorry, I’ve only tried it with the setup in the video. I’m currently debating whether to upgrade the steam wand on this machine or just wait until I replace the whole thing.

Great video & review at Home-barista! Have you tried the pitcher with any 3 hole steam tip? I’ve got a silvia v3 and want to buy this jug if it works for silvia.

I have a suggestion..

Since the steam wand is so low to the counter, position the carezza so the steam wand hangs over the counter so you have infinite room below you. Just a thought.
