Here is a 14g dose of coffee, ground with a Kyocera CM-45 hand grinder. As you can see, there is a slight tamp, if you can call it that, after the grounds have been compacted with a few knocks of the double filter basket on the counter. A quick polish and some more "levelling" with my fingers, and a spin to show evenness = 5mm tamp. This is a "no headroom" method which leaves you not having to worry about disturbing the puck on the lifting of the lever. Since the LaPav has a clearance of 7mm and my tamper has sidewalls of only 5mm, I let the grouphead do a final tamp of the 2mm. This leaves me with no headroom between the grounds, which in turn insures that I will not "disturb" the puck as I raise the lever.

Sorry to my synth friends that sub to me – espressos machines and coffee are my other obsessions.
